When surface disruption isn’t an option and accuracy is non-negotiable, microtunneling is the solution. This trenchless method allows for the installation of utility lines with unmatched precision – all without disturbing what’s above.
At Big Sky Limited, we use laser-guided, remotely operated systems to complete trenchless installations in challenging environments with minimal risk, maximum accuracy, and zero guesswork.
Microtunneling is a remotely controlled, guided pipe jacking process that uses continuous mechanical or slurry pressure to support the excavation face while pipe is jacked into place from a launch shaft. The system provides hydrostatic and earth pressure balance, reducing ground loss and preventing surface settlement – even in unstable soils or high groundwater conditions.
For microtunnels under 1,200 feet, a laser guidance system is typically used to maintain line and grade – often within 1 inch of tolerance both vertically and horizontally. This makes microtunneling an ideal method for gravity-dependent utilities like stormwater and sewer lines, where precision is critical.
Maintains tight line and grade
No trenching or open excavation required
High groundwater? No problem.
Reduces risk with limited man entry
From small bores to large-diameter mains
Got a tough crossing that needs total control? We’ll help you figure out if microtunneling is the right fit — and execute with precision when it is.
